The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is a rugged, 47-km-long backpacking (wilderness) trail that follows the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The trail is located in Juan de Fuca Provincial Park.
Established in 1994, the trail begins at China Beach and ends at Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew traversing through Juan de Fuca Provincial Park.
This unique trail was created through the Commonwealth Nature Legacy as an enduring reminder of the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games. Preservation of a living legacy of unprecedented natural beauty, accessible to all, was considered a fitting tribute to the spirit of the Games.
Construction and preservation of this trail had been made possible by the efforts of government, local industries and citizens. Land exchanges and gifts of land had come from Western Forest Products and Timberwest. The trail is being upgraded with funding from Forest Renewal BC and the Environmental Youth Team (E-Team). Unfortunately, these upgrades may be in vain as private landowners seek development of privately-owned land that overlaps with the Juan de Fuca trail. Currently, a West Vancouver developer seeks zoning from the Capital Regional District (CRD) to allow for 279 buildings sprawled for 7 km between China Beach and Sombrio. First Nations land claims in the area have not been resolved.
Unlike many other trails, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail can be hiked in part, as a day hike, or hiked in four to six continuous days.
